It was first commissioned on December 4, 1943, before being decommissioned on February 12, 1947. The vessel was then recommissioned on February 1, 1951, and was again decommissioned on May 15, 1952.

The USS Bang was recommissioned for a third time on October 4, 1952, before finally being decommissioned on October 1, 1972. After being in service for a total of 29 years and 3 months, it was stricken from the naval register on November 1, 1974. Its final fate was a transfer to Spain on the same day it was last decommissioned, October 1, 1972.
