USS Belknap (DLG-26, CG-26)

The USS Belknap, named after George E. Belknap (1832–1903) and Reginald R. Belknap (1871–1959), was ordered on May 16, 1961 and built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The ship was laid down on February 5, 1962 and later launched on July 20, 1963, with the sponsorship of Mrs. Leonard B. Cresswell, the granddaughter and daughter of the RADM Belknaps.

The USS Belknap was acquired on November 4,1964 and subsequently commissioned on November 7, 1964. It was initially decommissioned on December 20, 1975 and then recommissioned in May 1980.

The USS Belknap was in active service for a total of 27 years and 1 month, before being decommissioned for the final time on February 15, 1995. It was reclassified as CG-26 on June 30, 1975 and was ultimately stricken on December 15, 1995. The fate of the ship was sealed when it was sunk as a target on September 24, 1998.
