The USS Benham (DD-796) was named after Andrew E. K. Benham and built by Bethlehem Steel in Staten Island, New York. The construction process began on April 23, 1943, and it was launched on August 30, 1943. The vessel was first commissioned on December 20, 1943, before being decommissioned on October 18, 1946.

It was later recommissioned on March 24, 1951, and remained active for a total of approximately 19 years and 1 month, until its final decommissioning on June 30, 1960. Ultimately, the ship was stricken on January 15, 1974, then loaned to Peru on December 15, 1960.
