USS Canberra, named after HMAS Canberra (D33), was ordered on July 1, 1940. The ship was built by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts, with its construction starting on September 3, 1941.

The vessel was launched on April 19, 1943, and was sponsored by Alice Dixon. The Canberra was officially commissioned on October 14, 1943, then decommissioned on March 7, 1947. However, the ship was recommissioned on June 15, 1956, and was active for a total of approximately 24 years and 5 months.

The Canberra was finally decommissioned for good on February 2, 1970. The ship was classified as CAG-2 on January 4, 1952, but was reclassified as CA-70 on May 1, 1968. The callsign of the USS Canberra was NBLS with its hull number being CA-70. The vessel had the nickname "Can-Do Kangaroo." It was stricken from the naval register on July 31, 1978, and was officially scrapped on July 31, 1980.
