The USS Catamount (LSD-17) was named after the Catamount Tavern in Old Bennington, Vermont. This naval ship was launched on January 27, 1945, by the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, and it was commissioned later that year on April 9, 1945. The USS Catamount was active for almost 25 years before it was decommissioned on March 31, 1970.

The USS Catamount was officially stricken from the naval register on October 15, 1976. The fate of the USS Catamount was determined on December 4, 1975, when it was sold for scrap.
