The USS Chemung was a naval vessel named after the Chemung River in New York. It was built by Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland, and was launched on September 9, 1939. The USS Chemung was acquired by the Navy on June 5, 1941, and then commissioned less than a month later, on July 3, 1941.

USS Chemung was in active service for 29 years and 2 months, until it was decommissioned on September 18, 1970. Less than a year later, in May 1971, the USS Chemung was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register.

Vessel's fate was sealed in the same month when it was scrapped.
