USS Churchill County (LST-583)

The USS LST-583, later known as the USS Churchill County, was named after Churchill County, Nevada. This ship was built by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron in Evansville, Indiana. Its construction commenced on May 18, 1944, and it was launched less than two months later on July 5, 1944. Mrs. D. C. Hollis had the honor of sponsoring the ship. The USS LST-583 was first commissioned on August 2, 1944, before it was decommissioned in March 1946.

It was renamed the USS Churchill County (LST-583) on July 1, 1955, and recommissioned on November 1, 1960. However, it was decommissioned again in September 1968. The ship served actively for a total of nine years and eight months. The USS Churchill County was stricken on September 15, 1974. It carried the identification IMO number: 8624187. During its service, it was honored with three battle stars for its role in World War II.

The ship's fate was sealed when it was sold on August 1, 1975.
