The USS Collett (DD-730), named after John A. Collett, was built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The ship was laid down on October 11, 1943, and subsequently launched on March 5, 1944. It was then commissioned on May 16, 1944.

The USS Collett remained active for a period of 26 years and 7 months before it was decommissioned on December 18, 1970. Officially stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on February 1, 1974, the ship bore the motto "Virtus Velox," which translates to "Swift Courage".

Its final fate was transfer to Argentina on June 4, 1974.
