The construction of the ship began on December 14, 1942, and it was launched on September 11, 1943. The USS Currituck was commissioned into service on June 26, 1944. It remained active for 23 years and 4 months until it was decommissioned on October 31, 1967.

USS Currituck was officially stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on April 1, 1971. Later that same year, the ship was sold for scrapping.
