USS Gridley (DLG-21)

The USS Gridley (DLG-21) was named after Charles Vernon Gridley and built by the Seattle Naval Station Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington. Construction began on July 15, 1960, and the ship was launched more than a year later on July 31, 1961. It was commissioned on May 25, 1963, but was decommissioned on September 10, 1968.

USS Gridley was recommissioned on January 17, 1970, and remained active for about 24 years and 4 months until it was again decommissioned on January 21, 1994. The ship was then reclassified as CG-21 on June 30, 1975. On the same day as its final decommission, January 21, 1994, it was stricken from the naval register.

Throughout its service, the vessel bore the ambitious motto, "World's Greatest Cruiser". Ultimately, the Gridley was sold for scrap to International Shipbreaking LTD in Brownsville, Texas on October 4, 2003. It was reacquired from MARAD on January 23, 2004, and scrapping was completed by March 31, 2005.
