USS Hornet (CV-12)

The USS Hornet (CV-12), named after the insect Hornet, was ordered on May 20, 1940, and subsequently awarded on September 9, 1940. It was constructed at the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, with the groundwork being laid down on August 3, 1942. The ship was launched a year later on August 30, 1943, and then commissioned on November 29, 1943. Initially decommissioned on January 15, 1947, the USS Hornet was recommissioned on September 11, 1953, but later decommissioned again on June 26, 1970, thus being active for approximately 20 years and 8 months in total.

Originally named Kearsarge, it was renamed Hornet in October 1942. Identified by the callsign NBGC and recognized by the hull number of CV-12, it was reclassified as CVA-12 on October 1, 1952, and later as CVS-12 on June 27, 1958. The ship was stricken on July 25, 1989.

Today, the USS Hornet serves as a museum ship at the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda, California.
