USS Intrepid (CV-11, CVA-11, CVS-11)

The USS Intrepid (CV-11, CVA-11, CVS-11) was named after the USS Intrepid (1904). The ship was built at the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Construction on the ship began on December 1, 1941, and it was launched on April 26, 1943. The Intrepid was commissioned on August 16, 1943, and was in active service for a total of 30 years and 7 months before being decommissioned on March 15, 1974. The ship was reclassified as the CVA-11 on October 1, 1952, and then later as the CVS-11 on March 31, 1962.

The USS Intrepid was officially removed from the naval register on February 23, 1982. Its callsign was NBQK and its hull number was CV-11. It was famously known by its nickname, the "Fighting I".

Currently, it is preserved as a museum ship at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum located in New York City.
