On March 15, 1967, the USS John Paul Jones was reclassified from DD-932 to DDG-32. It was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on November 30, 1985. The ship had the motto "I have not yet begun to fight".

Ultimately, the USS John Paul Jones met its end on January 31, 2001, when it was sunk as a target.
