USS Lewis & Clark (SSBN-644)

The USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644) was named after Meriwether Lewis (1774–1809) and William Clark (1770–1838), notable for their Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 to 1806. The ship was awarded on November 1, 1962, and was built at the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Its construction began on July 29, 1963, and it was launched on November 21, 1964.

The USS Lewis and Clark was sponsored by Mrs. M. F. Engman and Mrs. M. G. Sale, and was officially commissioned on December 22, 1965. It was in active service for 26 years and 6 months, until it was decommissioned on June 27, 1992. It was stricken from the naval register on August 1, 1992.

The fate of the USS Lewis and Clark was decided as it was scrapped via the Ship and Submarine Recycling Program, beginning on October 1, 1995 and completed on September 23, 1996. The sail and top of the rudder were preserved.
