The order for the submarine was placed on August 8, 1963, and it was built by the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. The process of laying down the submarine started on July 7, 1964, and it was launched on October 23, 1965. Miss Patricia O. V. McGettigan sponsored the submarine.

The USS Mariano G. Vallejo was commissioned on December 16, 1966, remaining active for 28 years and 2 months before it was decommissioned on March 9, 1995. On the same day, it was struck from the Naval Vessel Register.

The fate of the submarine was determined to be scrapping via the Ship and Submarine Recycling Program, which began on October 1, 1994, and was completed by December 22, 1995.
