USS Maury & Renate (AGS-16, AKA-36)

The USS Maury, initially named Renate from 1945 to 1946, was named after the asteroid Renate and Matthew Fontaine Maury. It was built by the Kaiser Shipyard in Providence, Rhode Island, with its construction commencing on November 21, 1944. The ship was launched on January 31, 1945, and commissioned less than a month later, on February 28, 1945.

The USS Maury served continuously for almost 25 years, from its commissioning to its decommissioning on December 19, 1969. It was renamed Maury on July 12, 1946, and on the same day, it was reclassified as AGS-16, a survey ship. The ship was officially stricken on the day it was decommissioned.

During its service, the USS Maury earned six battle stars and a Meritorious Unit Commendation, particularly for its role in Vietnam. Unfortunately, the Maury's fate was to be sold for scrap in 1973.
