The USS O'Bannon (DD-450) was named in honor of First Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon. Construction, or its laying down, began on March 3, 1941 by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. After nearly a year, the ship was launched on February 19, 1942, and it was officially commissioned into service on June 26, 1942.
USS O'Bannon remained operational for approximately 27 years and 7 months-finally being decommissioned on January 30, 1970. On the same day, the ship was stricken, to be later sold for scrap on June 6, 1970.
