USS Okanogan (APA-220)

The USS Okanogan was ordered as a Type VC2-S-AP5 hull, MCE hull 568 and was named after Okanogan County, Washington. Its builder was Richmond Shipyard in Richmond, California, and it bore the yard number 568. The construction of USS Okanogan started on August 10, 1944, and it was launched on October 26, 1944, sponsored by Mrs. E. J. Husted. It was commissioned on December 3, 1944. The vessel was active for a total of 25 years and 2 months before it was decommissioned on February 5, 1970.

The USS Okanogan was re-designated as an Amphibious Transport (LPA-220) on January 1, 1969. It was stricken on June 1, 1973. The ship has two identification hull symbols: APA-220 and LPA-220; its code letters were NPQW. The vessel was honored with one battle star for its World War II service, six battle stars for its service during the Korean War, and five campaign stars for its service in the Vietnam War. Its fate was to be transferred to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) on April 20, 1971.

USS Okanogan was laid up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay Group, Benicia, California trade-out on October 2, 1979, and then withdrawn on November 19, 1979.
