The USS Philippine Sea, named after the Battle of the Philippine Sea, was built by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts. Over the years, USS Philippine Sea classification changed several times: it was reclassified as CVA-47 in October 1952, then as CVS-47 in November 15, 1955, and finally as AVT-11 in May 15, 1959.The ship was in active service for 12 years and 7 months before it was decommissioned on December 28, 1958.

Identified by the callsign NTMU and the hull number CV-47, the USS Philippine Sea was stricken on December 1, 1969 and later scrapped in March 1971.
