The USS Rockbridge, named after Rockbridge County, Virginia, was built by the Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver, Washington. The laying down of this ship was performed on September 2, 1944, followed by its launch on October 28, 1944.

The USS Rockbridge was commissioned just a few weeks later on November 18, 1944. After nearly three years of service, the ship was decommissioned on March 8, 1947, but was recommissioned on December 23, 1950. The USS Rockbridge was actively in service for a total of about 18 years and 10 months before being decommissioned again on November 29, 1968, and stricken from the naval register on December 1, 1968.

USS Rockbridge earned one battle star during World War II. Its fate was sealed on May 27, 1969, when it was sold for scrapping.
