USS Savo Island (CVE-78)

The USS Savo Island, originally named Kaita Bay, is an escort carrier named after two locations: Kaita Bay in the Territory of Alaska and the Battle of Savo Island. It was ordered as a Type S4-S2-BB3 hull, MCE hull 1115, on June 18, 1942. The construction of the carrier took place at the Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver, Washington.

The USS Savo Island was laid down on September 27, 1943, and launched on December 22, 1943. It was commissioned for service on February 3, 1944, and remained active for nearly three years before being decommissioned on December 12, 1946. Despite being stricken from the Navy List on May 8, 1946, the USS Savo Island received several honors and awards, including four Battle Stars and a Presidential Unit Citation for service throughout the Philippines campaign.

USS Savo Island hull symbol was CVE-78. The escort carrier's fate was sealed on February 29, 1960, when it was sold for scrap.
