USS Shangri-La (CV-38, CVA-38, CVS-38)

The USS Shangri-La (CV-38, CVA-38, CVS-38), identified by callsign NTIF, was an aircraft carrier in the US Navy, named after the fictional land of Shangri-La. Its construction was ordered on August 7, 1942 and it was built at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia. The ship was laid down on January 15, 1943, launched on February 24, 1944, and commissioned on September 15, 1944. After being decommissioned on November 7, 1947, it was then recommissioned on May 10, 1951.

USS Shangri-La was active for a total of 8 years and 4 months, being decommissioned once again on November 14, 1952. The ship was reclassified to CVA-38 on October 1, 1952, and to CVS-38 on June 30, 1969. Its service ended when it was stricken from the naval register on July 15, 1982.

The USS Shangri-La was also known by its nickname "Tokyo Express". In 1988, the ship was scrapped.
