The USS Sterlet (SS-392) was built by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, with its construction laid down on July 14, 1943. The ship was launched a few months later on October 27, 1943, and was formally commissioned on March 4, 1944. It was decommissioned for the first time on September 18, 1948, only to be recommissioned two years later on August 26, 1950.

After nearly two more decades in service, the USS Sterlet was decommissioned for the last time on September 30, 1968, making it active for a total of 23 years and 1 month. It was officially stricken from the naval register on October 1, 1968, and met its fate on January 31, 1969, when it was sunk as a target.
