USS Thor (ARC-4), ex: Vanadis (AKA-49)

The USS Thor (ARC-4), formerly known as Vanadis (AKA-49), was named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder and built by the Kaiser Shipyard in Providence, Rhode Island. Initially named Vanadis, after the asteroid or Freia, it was laid down on April 18, 1945, and launched on June 8, 1945. Just a month later, on July 9, 1945, Vanadis was commissioned.

USS Thor was decommissioned on March 27, 1946, and stricken from the naval register on June 5, 1946. Its fate, on July 2, 1946, was to be transferred to the Maritime Commission. It was reacquired and renamed Thor on April 14, 1955.

The recommissioning of Thor occurred on January 3, 1956. Subsequently, Thor was decommissioned on July 2, 1973 and then entered service with the Military Sealift Command on the day it was decommissioned. Thor went out of service on April 1974. It had an active period of 28 years and 10 months in total. Ultimately, it was sold for scrapping on September 22, 1977.
