The USS Turner Joy (DD-951) was named after Charles Turner Joy. The ordering of the ship occurred on January 27, 1956. Built by the Seattle Naval Station Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington, its keel was laid down on September 30, 1957. The ship was launched on May 5, 1958 and then acquired by the navy on July 27, 1959. The USS Turner Joy was commissioned on August 3, 1959, and remained active for about 23 years and 4 months until it was decommissioned on November 22, 1982.

The USS Turner Joy was stricken from the navy list on February 13, 1990. The motto of the USS Turner Joy was "Esse Quam Videri," which translates as "To be rather than to seem."

Ultimately, the USS Turner Joy was donated as a museum and memorial to the Bremerton Historic Ships Association on April 10, 1991, where it remains berthed at Bremerton, Washington.
