The USS William H. Standley, named after William H. Standley, was ordered on January 16, 1962. Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine was selected as the builder. After decommission, the ship was stricken on the same date, February 11, 1994. It had multiple homeports throughout its lifetime, including NS Mayport, NS Charleston, and finally NS San Diego.

Ultimately, the USS William H. Standley met its fate on June 23, 2005, when it was sunk as a target.
