The USS William H. Standley, named after William H. Standley, was ordered on January 16, 1962. Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine was selected as the builder. The construction process began with the laying down of the ship on July 29, 1963, followed by its launch on December 19, 1964. The Navy acquired the ship on June 28, 1966, and it was officially commissioned on July 9, 1966.

The USS William H. Standley remained active for 27 years and 7 months before being decommissioned on February 11, 1994. During its service, it was reclassified as CG-32 on June 30, 1975. After decommission, the ship was stricken on the same date, February 11, 1994. It had multiple homeports throughout its lifetime, including NS Mayport, NS Charleston, and finally NS San Diego.

Ultimately, the USS William H. Standley met its fate on June 23, 2005, when it was sunk as a target.
