The USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624, SSN-624), named after the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924), was ordered and awarded on February 9, 1961. The submarine was built by Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, with the keel laid on September 13, 1961. On February 22, 1963, it was launched and sponsored by Miss Eleanor Axson Sayre, a granddaughter of Woodrow Wilson.

The USS Woodrow Wilson was commissioned on December 27, 1963, remaining active for approximately 30 years and 8 months before it was decommissioned on September 1, 1994. The submarine was reclassified as an attack submarine (SSN-624) in 1990 and was stricken on the same day it was decommissioned.

The fate of the USS Woodrow Wilso was decided when it was recycled via the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program from September 26, 1997, through October 27, 1998.
