The USS Yellowstone (AD-27) was named after Yellowstone National Park, which spans across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Its construction was undertaken by Todd Shipyard in Tacoma, Washington. The ship was laid down on October 16, 1944, and then launched on April 12, 1945. Subsequently, the ship was commissioned on January 16, 1946.

The USS Yellowstone remained active for 28 years and 8 months before being decommissioned on September 11, 1974. A day later, on September 12, 1974, it was stricken. The ship ultimately met its fate a year after being decommissioned, when it was sold for scrapping in September 1975.
