The USS America, named after the United States of America, was ordered on November 25, 1960. It was built by the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The construction started on January 9, 1961, and the ship was launched on February 1, 1964. It was officially commissioned on January 23, 1965.

The USS America was active for 31 years and 6 months, until it was decommissioned and stricken from the naval register on August 9, 1996. The ship was reclassified as CV-66 during its service.

Its homeport was in Norfolk, Virginia, and it carried the motto, "Don't Tread on Me". Known by its nickname, The Big "A", the ship met its fate after live-fire testing, being scuttled on May 14, 2005.
