The USS Baltimore, whose namesake is the City of Baltimore, Maryland, was built by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts. The construction of the ship was initiated on May 26, 1941, and it was launched more than a year later on July 28, 1942. The ship's sponsor was Mrs. Howard W. Jackson. The USS Baltimore was officially commissioned on April 15, 1943. The ship remained active for 13 years and one month before it was decommissioned on May 31, 1956.

The hull number assigned to the USS Baltimore was CA-68 and its operational callsign was NAKY. Ultimately, it was struck from the naval registry on February 15, 1971. The vessel met its fate when it was scrapped on April 10, 1972.
