Built by the General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut, the vessel was laid down on May 25, 1963, and launched on December 5, 1964. Mrs. Francis L. Moseley and Mrs. Leon V. Chaplin sponsored the submarine which was commissioned into active service on October 22, 1965.
The USS Benjamin Franklin was in active service for 28 years and 1 month until its decommissioning on November 23, 1993, the same day it was stricken. Its fate was decided through the Ship and Submarine Recycling Program, which completed scrapping the vessel on August 21, 1995.
