USS Bluegill (SS-242, SSK-242)

The USS Bluegill (SS-242) was ordered and built by the General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. Its construction began on December 7, 1942, and was launched on August 8, 1943, sponsored by Mrs. W. Sterling Cole. The submarine was initially commissioned on November 11, 1943.

It was decommissioned for the first time on March 1, 1946, then recommissioned on May 3, 1951. The vessel was decommissioned again on July 7, 1952, then reclassified as a Hunter-killer submarine (SSK-242) on the same day. Subsequently, it was recommissioned on May 2, 1953, and reclassified as an Attack submarine (SS-242) on August 10, 1959. On April 1, 1966, it was reclassified once more, this time as an Auxiliary submarine (AGSS-242).

The USS Bluegill was finally decommissioned on June 28, 1969. It was active for a total of approximately 18 years and 10 months.

The submarine was officially removed from the naval vessel register on June 28, 1969. Its fate was decided when it was scuttled on December 3, 1970. It was refloated in November 1983, and subsequently scuttled again that same month.
