The ship was recommissioned multiple times - on January 15, 1951, September 6, 1955 - and decommissioned again on May 15, 1953, and July 2, 1971. The ship was active for a total of approximately 26 years and 6 months. It was reclassified as CVA-31 on October 1, 1952.
The USS Bon Homme Richard, marked with the hull number CV-31 and with the call sign NHCL, was stricken on September 20, 1989, and eventually, it was scrapped in 1992.
