USS Boxer (CV-21)
The USS Boxer (CV-21), named after the HMS Boxer (1812), was ordered in 1943 and built at the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The ship was laid down on September 13, 1943, and launched on December 14, 1944. On April 16, 1945, the USS Boxer was commissioned. Its activities spanned over 24 years and 8 months, until it was decommissioned on December 1, 1969.
Over its service, the USS Boxer was reclassified multiple times: as CVA-21 on October 1, 1952; as CVS-21 on November 15, 1955; and finally as LPH-4 on January 30, 1959.
The USS Boxer, with the hull number CV-21 and the callsign NXOP, upheld the motto "Volens Et Potens," meaning "Willing And Able." It was stricken on the same day it was decommissioned, and later scrapped at Kearny in February 1971.
