The USS Butte was built by the General Dynamics in Quincy, Massachusetts, and named in honor of Butte, Montana. The construction was ordered on March 30, 1965, and the ship was laid down on July 21, 1966. Shortly after, the USS Butte was launched on August 9, 1967, and ultimately commissioned on December 14, 1968.
The USS Butte had an active duration of 27 years and 5 months, before being decommissioned on June 3, 1996. Following its decommission, the USS Butte was transferred to the MSC until it was taken out of service and stricken on May 24, 2004.
The original homeport of the USS Butte was in Norfolk, Virginia, but its last known station was the Naval Weapons Station Earle. The final fate of the USS Butte was to be sunk as a target on July 3, 2006.
