USS Castor (AKS-1)
The USS Castor (AKS-1) was originally ordered as the SS Challenger C2-Cargo hull. It was constructed by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock in Kearny, New Jersey, and was launched on May 20, 1939. It was subsequently acquired on October 30, 1940, and officially commissioned on March 12, 1941, serving until it was decommissioned on June 30, 1947.
After three years, the Castor was brought back into service on November 24, 1950. The vessel remained active for almost 18 years until it was taken out of service on October 31, 1968. A month later, on December 1, 1968, it was stricken. The ship met its fate in September 1969 when it was sold for scrapping.
