The ship was laid down on June 16, 1958, launched on September 8, 1959, and was officially commissioned on September 10, 1960.
The USS Charles F. Adams was in active duty for approximately 29 years and 11 months until it was decommissioned on August 1, 1990. During its service, the ship was reclassified as DDG-2 on April 23, 1957, and its call sign was NBJR. The ship bore the hull number DD-952 and took pride in its motto, "First in class, second to none."
Unfortunately, it was stricken on the same day it was decommissioned - August 1, 1990 - and eventually scrapped in 2021.
