The USS Charleston (PG-51), named after Charleston, South Carolina, was built at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in North Charleston, South Carolina. This vessel was laid down on October 27, 1934, and launched on February 25, 1936, under the sponsorship of Mrs. C.L.B. Rivers. The USS Charleston was first commissioned on July 8, 1936, and later decommissioned on May 10, 1946.
Identified by the Hull symbol PG-51, it was recommissioned on March 25, 1948, and transferred to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. However, the ship was decommissioned for the last time in 1957, after its final cruise for the Maritime Academy. The USS Charleston was in active service for a total of 19 years and 5 months. During its service, the ship was honored with one Battle Star.
Ultimately, the USS Charleston's fate was to be sold.
