USS Cimarron (AO-22)
The USS Cimarron (AO-22) was named after the Cimarron River, which flows through Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, as well as towns in Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas. It is also considered to be the namesake of the Cimarron (La Flecha) River of New Mexico. This ship was built by the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock in Chester, Pennsylvania. The construction of the USS Cimarron started on April 18, 1938, and it was launched on January 7, 1939, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Louise Harrington Leahy. The ship was officially commissioned on March 20, 1939, and remained active for 29 years and 7 months until it was decommissioned on October 1, 1968.
USS Cimarron was stricken from the naval register on October 10, 1968. During its service, it received several honors and awards, including 10 battle stars for World War II service, 7 battle stars for Korean War service, and 4 campaign stars for Vietnam War service.
The ship met its fate in 1969, when it was sold for scrap.
