The USS Cleveland, named in honor of Cleveland, Ohio, was ordered on May 17, 1938, and built by the New York Shipbuilding in Camden, New Jersey. The ship was laid down on July 1, 1940, and subsequently launched on November 1, 1941. After several months, it was commissioned on June 15, 1942. USS Cleveland remained active for 4 years and 8 months before it was decommissioned on February 7, 1947.
However, USS Cleveland wasn't stricken until March 1, 1959, and finally met its fate on February 18, 1960, when it was sold for scrap.
