USS Columbus (CA-74, CG-12)

The USS Columbus, christened "The Tall Lady," was an illustrious naval vessel named after the city of Columbus, Ohio. The ship was ordered on September 9, 1940, and was laid down on June 28, 1943, by the notable builders, Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts. The Columbus was launched on November 30, 1944, under the sponsorship of Mrs. E. G. Meyers. The vessel was commissioned on June 8, 1945, receiving the hull number CA-74, and holding the motto "Ad Frontes Mundi".

USS Columbus was reclassified as CG-12 on September 30, 1959. Throughout its service period, it communicated under the callsign NBZW. After being highly active for 29 years, 7 months, the celebrated USS Columbus was decommissioned on January 31, 1975.

It was then struck from the naval register on August 9, 1976, and finally met its fate when it was scrapped on October 3, 1977.
