The USS Coontz was named after Robert Coontz and was built by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. The construction was laid down on March 1, 1957, and it was launched on December 6, 1958, as a Guided Missile Frigate (DLG-9). It was officially commissioned on July 15, 1960, and was in active service for 29 years and 2 months before being decommissioned on October 2, 1989.
On July 1, 1975, it was reclassified as a Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG-40). The fleet's fate was sealed in February 1999 when it was sold for scrap.
