USS Custer (APA-40)
The USS Custer (APA-40) was ordered as a type (C3-S-A2) hull, MC hull 388. It was constructed by the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Initially, it was laid down as SS Sea Eagle and was later launched on November 6, 1942, with Mrs. L. S. Border as its sponsor.
USS Custer was acquired on January 23, 1943, as AP-85 and commissioned later that year on July 18 as APA-40. The ship was active for approximately 2 years and 10 months before being decommissioned on May 24, 1946. It was reclassified as APA-40 on February 1, 1943.
USS Custer was then struck on July 19, 1946. During its service, the ship was awarded six battle stars for its service in World War II. The ship was eventually scrapped in 1973.
