The submarine was awarded on March 3, 1959, and was built by Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The USS Dace officially became operational when it was commissioned on April 4, 1964.
The submarine served for 24 years and 8 months before being decommissioned on December 2, 1988, which is also when it was stricken. The USS Dace's fate was determined by the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program, with the recycling process completed on January 1, 1997.
