Its construction began on May 11, 1955, and the ship was launched on September 8, 1956. The USS Du Pont was acquired on June 21, 1957, and officially commissioned on July 1, 1957. The ship remained active for approximately 25 years and 8 months before being decommissioned on March 4, 1983.
USS Du Pont was officially removed from navy records, a process known as being stricken, on June 1, 1990. The vessel met its final fate when it was sold for scrap on February 10, 1999.
