The USS Edisto, named after Edisto Island in South Carolina, was built by Western Pipe & Steel in San Pedro, California. The construction began in the 1946 WPS yard, and it was officially launched on May 29, 1946. Mrs. George B Gelly had the privilege of sponsoring the vessel. USS Edisto was commissioned on March 20, 1947, and it took its maiden voyage on April 11, 1947. The ship was active for 18 years and 7 months until it was decommissioned on October 20, 1965.
USS Edisto was reclassified as AGB-2 on January 29, 1949, with Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. as its homeport. Nicknamed the "Ready Eddie," the ship was marked as AGB-2 on identifying documents. Its journey ended when it was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard on October 20, 1965.
