USS Enterprise (CVAN-65)

The USS Enterprise, nicknamed "Big E", is named after the USS Enterprise (CV-6). The order for its construction was placed on November 15, 1957, and it was built by the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The cost came to a total of $451.3 million, which would be an equivalent of $4.35 billion in 2021 dollars. Its construction began on February 4, 1958, and it was launched and christened on September 24, 1960. The USS Enterprise was acquired on October 29, 1961, and officially commissioned on November 25, 1961.

USS Enterprise was in service from January 12, 1962, until it was taken out of service on December 1, 2012. During this period, the Enterprise was active for approximately 50 years and 11 months. It was reclassified as CVN-65 from CVA (N)-65 and refitted on September 27, 1994. The ship was decommissioned and stricken on February 3, 2017. Currently, it is awaiting recycling at the HII Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia.
