The USS Essex (CV-9) was named after the USS Essex (1799), and was ordered on July 3, 1940. It was built by the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, at a cost of $78 million USD. It was recommissioned on January 15, 1951, and was finally decommissioned on June 30, 1969.
USS Essex was reclassified as CVA-9 in October 1952, and again as CVS-9 in March 1960. The ship was stricken on June 1, 1973. Its homeport was Quonset Point and it was also known by its hull number, CV-9. The nickname for USS Essex was "Fightin'est Ship in The Fleet". Sadly, it was scrapped in 1973.
