The USS George Bancroft (SSBN-643) was named after George Bancroft (1800–1891), who served as the U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1845 to 1846. The submarine was ordered on November 1, 1962, and was built by the General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. The USS George Bancroft was laid down on August 24, 1963, and launched on March 20, 1965, with sponsorship from Mrs. Anita Irvine. It was officially commissioned on January 22, 1966, and remained active for 27 years and 8 months until it was decommissioned on September 21, 1993, the same day it was stricken.
The submarine underwent scrapping via the Ship and Submarine Recycling Program, a process completed on March 30, 1998.
