The USS Gherardi, named after Bancroft Gherardi, was constructed by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ship was laid down on September 16, 1941, and then launched on February 12, 1942. The Gherardi was officially commissioned on September 15, 1942, under the identification DD-637. On November 15, 1944, the ship was reclassified as DMS-30. After being active for 13 years and 3 months, the Gherardi was decommissioned on December 17, 1955.
USS Gherardi was stricken from the naval register on June 1, 1971, and its fate was ultimately decided when it was sunk as a target off the coast of Puerto Rico on June 3, 1973.
